Consortium Information
This page provides information to facilitate a consistent shared vision of the Epistemic Insight initiative across all participating consortium institutions. Resources include research surveys to use with ITE trainees, ethics forms and examples of activities and information brochures.
The Key Note
The Key Note is designed to inform trainee teachers and tutors of the aims, purpose and objectives of the Epistemic Insight initiative.
Administering ITE Surveys
We are surveying ITE trainees to look for gaps in their understanding and their preparedness to teach enquiry (a) within science, (b) for questions that bridge science and other disciplines in school and (c) for big questions that bridge science, religion and the wider humanities.
The paper survey draws the trainees’ attention to these gaps and has an educative value. The survey is ‘opt-out’ and this is because it is deemed in the public interest and designed to inform our core business of helping prepare trainee teachers to teach.
IN PROJECT YEAR 1 (Sep 2019-July 2020)
- all consortium members who teach primary ITE are asked to administer the survey to primary and secondary courses you select – aiming for about 200 primary trainees and 80 secondary per institution depending on your numbers.
- The ten-minute survey is administered in sessions not by emailing out a link. Trainees can then ‘opt-out’ of answering any question they want to skip and can choose whether to hand it in. Please do a headcount in the session – this gives the ‘response rate’.
- Consortium members who teach secondary ITE are invited to also administer the secondary survey to whole cohorts where possible.
- Optional in project year 1: teaching an intervention in ITE and delivering the post-survey
PROJECT YEAR 2 (Sep 2020-July 2021)
- Pre and post surveys on either side of an intervention to address gaps identified in the survey.
- There is a suite of offers to support this – including the offer of a keynote for students, a budget to support the tutor who is helping to administer surveys, etc.
- Each student then receives a free booklet and/or discipline wheel designed to help address gaps. It can include your logo as well as CCCU’s logo (if you like)
